Google Might Index Content for Mobile Search

Search Engines are slowly starting to offer their own PDA/Mobile customized versions of their search engine. However, not many have decided to take a patent on a new search technology which might give them the advantage of obtaining a stronger search engine - offering different content for PDA.

New Search Engine - Search Wikia (Wikiasari)

I’ve been meaning to talk about this new search engine which is to be released by the founder of the Wikipedia Encyclopedia, Jimmy Wales. The correct name of the search engine is “Search Wikia”, not Wikiasari as other people say. This is causing some commotion since people are already making assumptions as to what the new search engine will accomplish.

Eurekster Search Engine Learns from Search Queries

We recently placed a Eurekster Swicki on our sidebar, since it seems to be all the commotion at the moment! There are a ton of reasons why Swicki’s are so great and how they can earn you a good amount of revenue as well!

First of all, register your swicki (do it quick so you get the URL you want), we registered http://seo-news-swicki.eurekster.com/.

Now there are a ton of reasons why a Swicki is the perfect search engine for your website. Unlike Google (or Google AdSense’s paid search) a Swicki will learn from what your visitors search for the most! In addition to that, they offer a “BuzzCloud” which is basically a small section below the search box which displays some of the terms most commonly searched for using your Swicki and the bigger the words are, the more they’ve been searched for.

But unlike Google search, they don’t:

They also have a directory full of Swickis you can check out as well!

There are also advertising programs available to users so they can advertise on the tons of Swickis out there! I recently saw that Search Engine Journal was using one and that was what first bought my attention to it!

Personally I have been looking for a service which pays like Google AdSense’s Paid Search and so far only heard of Clicksor. But most people said that they’re payouts were pretty bad (and I experienced it as well) so I was desperately searching for a service like Google AdSense Paid Search. The Swicki Eurekster was a perfect service for this new website I’m developing which revolves a little bit around a Search Engine (I’ll announce it next week most likely).

No advertisers have signed up with me yet, but I think it is pretty decent anyway considering how many more features it has than other similar programs!

AOL Employees Fired for Search Releases

AOL LogoA few hours ago, Elinor Mills and Anne Broache reported that AOL Employees were fired due to the Search Engine Data Logs which were released a few weeks back. The total damage is the fact that two AOL Employees have been fired and the chief technology officer is resigning. The CTO of AOL resigning is Maureen Govern. The AOL Chief Executive, Jon Miller, sent an E-Mail to the users notifying them of the change.

The two employees who were fired were:

However, Miller plans to tighten the security on the databases which contain search data and member information. Here is a quote from Miller’s view:

After the great lengths we’ve taken to build our members’ trust and be an industry leader on privacy, it was disheartening to see so much good work destroyed by a single act, this incident took place because some employees did not exercise good judgment or review their proposal with our privacy team. We are taking appropriate action with the employees who were responsible.

AOL has pulled the information from the web and prevents users from downloading the logs from their servers anymore. However, thanks to a few people who got a hold of it and decided to mirror it!

This action by AOL of course caused uproar and disbelief. Last week, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is a digital rights group in San Francisco, has filed a complaint against AOL. In addition to them, the World Piracy Forum has filed a complaint against the database as well!

Now the information in the database was kept anonymous, each user was assigned a variable and since the information in the database was so thorough, a good amount of people were able to go in and make scripts which can easily figure out who the user was!

Several newspapers and magazines like TIME have actually traced back a couple of users and even published the phone number so you could call up the person and ask them if they made the searches! ZDNet has traced a lot of the AOL Users to what they are looking for and what they are planning and the results are not so pretty!

A new website, AOL Psycho, is offering a nifty tool which helps you track what type of search queries a certain AOL User searched for with ease! Now the chances of finding someone you know is slim, but if you can search for the right queries in the database, you just might!

At the moment it is unclear whether AOL broke the law or not, but if they did, the FTC is supposed to take action soon!

Marc Rotenberg (executive director of Electronic Privacy Information Center) believes that:

AOL could do a real service to the online community if it would commit to permanently (deleting) all personal search details and challenge other search companies to do the same.

German Interview with Matt Cutts

There have been a ton of interviews with Matt Cutts and here is another one in German (click here for the direct audio link)! The interview isn’t in German, and it basically talks about Google’s ideas and such.

This interview focuses on the following fields of Google:

Which Search Engine has correct Markup?

Well Jake (a reader of Google BlogoScoped), had a simple idea of checking the W3C Markup Validation of the top Search Engines out there:

  1. MSN – Passed!
  2. Altavista – Failed, 38 errors
  3. Yahoo – Failed, 41 errors
  4. Google – Failed, 61 errors
  5. Ask.com – Failed, 64 errors
  6. Dogpile – Failed, 70 errors

It was a unique idea in it’s own sort of way, which shows which Search Engines (no matter how big they are) follow simple W3C Validation.

SES 2006 Google Dance Video

Well Google had a Google Dance at the SES (Search Engine Strategies) Conference in San Jose. We heard tons of good feedback on the thousands of seminars offered at the conference, but even more talk about the Google Dance (even a video on it)!

That’s right, earlier today morning a video was uploaded to YouTube which was a video of the Google Dance with a few funny clips and quotes here. You can watch it below:

Modern SEO Has PR4

Well last month there was a PR and Backlink Update to fix the problem with tons of new websites which recieved a PR5 with barely any backlinks! Anyway, we had setup a 301 redirect from Redscowl Bluesingsky before the update and it seems that Google has passed the Page Rank onto us now! We have a Page Rank 4 at the moment from the latest update!

Redirect domain.com to www.domain.com

Google seems to index pages from domain.com as well as www.domain.com and even though Google considers them to be from the same domain name from the latest Google Update (the Jagger Update I believe), they consider it to be two different pages.Well there is a simple solution and fix to this!

All you need to do is go to your root directory (public_html) and edit your .htaccess file by adding the following code anywhere in your .htaccess:

Options +FollowSymlinks

RewriteEngine on

rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc]

rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

I believe that only Google seems to have a problem with this at the moment and we have just done this to Modern SEO so that it will redirect from modernseo.com to www.modernseo.com as well!

Since it is a 301 redirect, major Search Engines (Google, Yahoo! and MSN) will be redirected correctly.

.edu and .gov Links Don’t Get Google Recognition

EducauseWell this definitely proved John Scott’s point, .edu and .gov links have finally been proven that they DO NOT get special recognition. Until now, it has been a big confusion, but now we have support from one person who you can trust!

Matt Cutts himself has stated that .edu and .gov websites do not recieve a boost in the Google SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page) as well as the fact that links from .edu and .gov websites do not recieve a boost as well! He has stated this fact in his latest video on Google Analytics - Lightning Round (which was posted on Modern SEO here). It is mostly a coincidence because .edu and .gov domain names usually have a higher Page Rank due to links, but not because of Google intervention.
